Professional: Major, U.S. Air Force; family medicine residency director;
president of a 400+ provider medical group; chief medical operations
officer for a health system, including starting a graduate medical
Personal: Married 25 years to my college sweetheart; two daughters in
graduate school (NYU Law and Harvard Anthropology); one daughter
studying computer engineering and art at Ohio State — GO BUCKS!
Military Service: Major, U.S. Air Force
Hobbies or Interests: Involved with organized medicine through the
AMA and AAFP since medical school. Currently chair of the AMA
Council on Long Range Planning and will run for the AMA Board of
Trustees in June 2018.
My most memorable moment from medical school: Missing about 20
questions in a row about the lower extremity on an anatomy test — I
realize it should be impossible (chance alone should have given me a
couple right answers), but it humbles me to this very day!
My mentor/favorite professor at the College of Medicine: Dr. Pam
Jelly-Boyers — she helped me get out of my shell and go abroad to
study primary care and health systems in the UK.
My advice to current medical students would be: Explore your
interests and passions. Learn to take time for yourself and turn off the
“medicine” for periods to allow yourself to recharge. Above all, find
mentors to share their knowledge and experience with you; then be a
mentor to others.
Additional Comments: I loved my seven years at Ohio State. I have
run into other Ohio State medical grads while living in seven different
states. Our experiences at Ohio State bring us together.
