honored seven alumni with four awards at the 2015 reunion & awards Celebration, recognizing excellence
in both the teaching and practice of medicine.

During homecoming weekend,
on oct. 9, the ohio state
university College of Medicine
interim Dean, Chris ellison,
MD, took over the College of
Medicine’s social media for
the day! Dr. ellison saw over
285,000 impressions on twitter,
more than 8,000 impressions
on facebook and 334 “likes”
on instagram. Current students
and alumni loved getting to
interact with him online.
ALUMNI AChIeveMeNT AwARD
Created in 1947, this award is
presented to MD or resident alumni
to acknowledge distinguished career
achievements, both in contributions
to the practice of medicine and to
society as a whole. Congratulations to
the 2015 recipients:
errol Alden, MD ’66, FAAp,
retired earlier this year as executive
director/Ceo, american academy of
pediatrics, a position he held since
2004; he served aap 28 years. after
completing his medical degree, Dr.
alden completed his residency at
Madigan army Medical Center and
a fellowship in neonatology at the
university of washington. his 25-
year military career included chair,
Department of pediatrics, uniformed
services university of the health
sciences. he has received numerous
high honors including the aMa lifetime
achievement award for medical
executives; Joseph st. Geme Jr.,
leadership award, the only medical
education award given by the entire
pediatric community, and world leader
in pediatrics from the international
society of tropical pediatrics. in
addition, he and his colleagues won the
aap Gold Medal award for a neonatal
resuscitation program.
Dennis e. Doherty, MD ’80, FCCp, is
professor of Medicine at the university
of Kentucky College of Medicine, and
was chairman of Medicine at lexington
VaMC. after completing his residency
in internal Medicine at ohio state, he
entered the top-ranked pulmonary
and Critical Care fellowship at the
university of Colorado and national
Jewish health Medical Centers in
Denver. his accomplishments include
earning his MD at age 24, being
tenured after six years and becoming
full professor after 10 years on faculty.
he has been principal investigator on
more than 55 grants and has published
more than 175 articles, abstracts and
chapters on pulmonary topics. he
served in leadership roles for numerous
national medical societies and has
been named to america’s top Doctors
for the past 12 years.
Michael patzakis, MD ’63, is
emeritus professor, Keck school of
Medicine at the university of southern
California, where he served 43 years,
the last 21 and a half as chair of the
orthopaedic surgery Department.
after completing an orthopaedic
residency at los angeles County-usC Medical Center, he completed
a fellowship in arthritis surgery at the
university of Colorado. he was first
to use a Cephalosporin antibiotic in
Dr. Ellison and Brutus Buckeye
