in this edition, Ohio State Medicine Alumni,
we celebrate our 50-year alumni – the
Class of 1965 – and our newest future
physicians – the Class of 2019.
at the Medical alumni reunion
weekend in october, the Class of
1965 celebrated their 50th reunion
and received their class medals at the
50 Year luncheon. Congratulations to
this exceptional class! among other
highlights of our successful weekend
was the friday evening reunion &
awards Celebration, where we honored
distinguished alumni (see page 10). and,
it was particularly heart-warming for me
to see henry floyd, MD, a member of
the Class of 1945, celebrate his reunion.
to my surprise and delight, Dr. floyd
shared with me that he had been an
intern of my father, edwin h. ellison, MD
’43, on surgery services.
on august 3, the Class of 2019
received their white coats and began
their medical education. among the
best and brightest classes to enter
the ohio state university College of
Medicine, this cohort has an average
Gpa of 3.72. their average MCat
score of 34 equates to the top 5th
percentile of students taking the
exam. further, it is significant that this
class is also among our most diverse
– comprising 54 percent women and
21. 9 percent ethnic and racial groups
underrepresented in medicine –
making it one of the most inclusive in
the united states. i want to personally
thank everyone who is supporting our
medical students through donations
to the white Coat sponsor program;
special thanks go to those of you who
joined Mary pat and me at the Dean’s
level. i am pleased to report that, as of
mid-october, the program has raised
more than $87,089 for scholarships,
thanks to all of our alumni and friends.
i am pleased to report that a committee
has been convened to begin the
search for the next dean of the College.
Michael Caligiuri, MD, director of the
ohio state university Comprehensive
Cancer Center and Ceo of the arthur
G. James Cancer hospital and richard
J. solove research institute, has agreed
to serve as chair. william Martin ii, MD,
dean of the College of public health,
will serve as vice-chair. i am delighted to
continue to serve as interim dean of the
College as we transition during this time.
we are looking forward to the Medical
alumni reunion weekend next year –
sept. 30 to oct. 2, 2016 – and hope you
can join us! on behalf of the College,
we wish you and your loved ones a
wonderful holiday season.
