Rising to the Next Level With
the Department of Biomedical
Education and Anatomy
Staying true to its mission to improve
people’s lives through innovation in
research, education and patient care,
The Ohio State University College of
Medicine has created the Department
of Biomedical Education and Anatomy
(BMEA), bringing heightened expertise
and academic excellence to Ohio
State’s progressive academic institution.
The BMEA department was established
in autumn 2016 by an enthusiastic
group of medical professionals. College
of Medicine Interim Dean E. Christopher
Ellison, MD, Vice Dean for Academic
Affairs Robert Bornstein, PhD, and
founding chair of the department Daniel
Clinchot, MD, spearheaded efforts to
bring the department to life.
Originally, the Department of Anatomy
was established within the College of
Medicine in 1914. Since that time it has
gone through several transformations
before becoming the program of focus
that it is today.
The program’s mission, vision and
values are driven through the Division
of Anatomy, Department of Biomedical
Education and Department of Anatomy.
BMEA is built on the foundation of
core biomedical disciplines and
centralizes undergraduate, graduate and
professional educational programs. It also
centers on research opportunities for
multiple disciplines, including bioethics.
Generally, BMEA re-establishes key
elements within the college, including a
core anatomical education and research
discipline. It also has created a foundation
for the future growth and success of
medical educators.
“This department is a home for
biomedical educators,” Dr. Clinchot
says. “It creates a community of
faculty who can collaborate on the
development and implementation
of curricula, biomedical education
research and scholarship, and it will
serve to foster educational innovation
and dissemination.”
BMEA programs offered through the
department include a Biomedical
Sciences undergraduate major,
Biomedical Sciences graduate program
and a professional degree program
(MD). The Anatomy program offerings
include an Anatomy minor, a Master
of Science in Anatomy (MS) and a
Doctorate of Philosophy in Anatomy
(PhD). Programs in Bioethics, an area of
expertise that is rapidly increasing, will
include a Bioethics minor and a Master
of Art in Bioethics (MA).
“The Division of Bioethics within the
department focuses on educational
programming by creating a new area
of emphasis within the College of
Medicine,” Dr. Clinchot adds. The
dynamic combination of core medical
disciplines that the BMEA assembles
is expected to bring Ohio State “to
the next level of the biomedical
education continuum.”
In addition, the department will support
body donation services to meet the
increasing national trend of body
donation for education or research.
Dr. Clinchot notes, “The populous
in general is much more open to
[anatomical donation], and being able
to manage that in a respectful and
dignified way will help us to grow not
only our research program but also our
innovative educational offerings.”
