MAKING AN IMPACT
Growing up in Marietta, Ohio, Bruce
Northrup, MD ’65, realized he had
big shoes to fill, but he didn’t realize
the lasting footprints he would
leave in the medical world and at
The Ohio State University College
of Medicine (OSUCOM).
Dr. Northrup, a retired neurosurgeon,
was raised in a Buckeye lineage of
OSUCOM graduates that included
his father, uncle and grandfather. Dr.
Northrup’s grandfather graduated in
1903, when the college was called
Starling Medical College. In addition,
Mrs. Fran Northrup, Dr. Northrup’s wife,
had two uncles and a cousin who also
graduated from OSUCOM.
At family gatherings, Mrs. Northrup
recalled how Dr. Northrup, his father,
uncle and grandfather often shared
stories about their medical student days
at Ohio State. “They would reminisce
about their similar experiences, and
that brought them all closer,” she says.
